A Review of UNAUTHORIZED from Chara Games

Our family loves to play games.  We were very excited to get a chance to try out a prototype of  UNAUTHORIZED, a brand new game from Chara Games,  This game is so new that they just launched their Kickstarter Campaign to get this game into production so that it is available to everyone.
Chara Games was founded in 2014 by Patrick and Katherine Lysaght.  Their goal is to design and develop games with Christian themes.  Their mission is to build games that create joy by developing relationships with God and the people around you.  Their games are unique because you work together strategically with each other to accomplish the missions rather than each player trying to accomplish their own mission.
UNAUTHORIZED is a 6-12 player card-style game.  It can be played in about 30 minutes.  This game is all about the underground church.  Each player is assigned a role to play throughout the game and your job in the game is to influence the loyalty of other players.  Sometimes your loyalty will be to the Church and sometimes it will be to the State, but the unique twist to this game is that your loyalty can change depending on the cards you draw.  The overall goal of the game is to get the majority of the players on the same side whether it be for the Church or the State.  This game is intended for ages 12 and up.  The game includes:
  • 12 Role Cards
  • 97 Experience Cards
  • 3 Reference Cards - 1 dealer card and 2 player reference cards
  • 12 Page, Full Color Rule Book
Since this game is for at least 6 people, we had a couple of friends over and figured out how to play it.  Of course Chara Games is fantastic and put together a great instructional video for this game that explains how to play step-by-step.  The video walks you through the game rules that are explained in the rule book, but for me watching it explained helps it sink in.  We each got dealt our role cards.  One person is the pastor and another is the police.  The other players have various roles depending on which side of their double-sided card they use.  Then we were dealt our experience cards.  Your influence on either the Church or the State depends on your experience cards.  The really fun part of this game is that your influence cards change through out the game and can ultimately change the outcome of the game.  After we figured out which side we were for initially we started our 4 rounds of play.  This is where the game always gets very interesting.  In the game, the Police want you to side with them for the State and the Pastor wants you to side with them for the Church.  Depending on the cards each person played and the cards you drew for your hand, your loyalty could change even if you decided initially to try and keep it the same.  In each round, each player gets to make a decision about what they are going to do and these also influence the outcome of the game.  We learned that there were a lot of possibilities which really made the game a lot of fun.  How we thought the game would end based on the beginning usually ended up not being the same.  At the end of the four rounds, the Church wins if the majority of the group is loyal to the church and at least one person isn't in prison and the State wins if the Church doesn't.  It was very interesting to see which side would win each game.
Overall, we really appreciate that there are so many options with the cards, characters, and actions for UNAUTHORIZED.  This gives the game unlimited endings which makes it a lot of fun.  We really like that we can play this game in big groups and share it with our friends.  Even though this game says it is for ages 12 and up, with help my 8 year old was able to play.  She watched a time or two while we played and then she got the idea of the game enough that she was able to play when she was sitting beside hubby or me.  She needed help, but she liked being able to think through her options.  This is a game that we will continue to play and try to master.  We have had a lot of fun so far with all our different outcomes.  We want to continue introducing it to our friends.  You can learn more about UNAUTHORIZED by clicking on the link.  We highly encourage you to learn more about Chara Games and all they have to offer.  We have truly enjoyed every game we have played from them and we love that they are a Christian, family business that we can support.  Please check out their Kickstarter campaign that they are currently running to get UNAUTHORIZED completely funded and out into stores.
